At MTNS & LKS, we are dedicated to producing beautiful hand-poured, natural soy wax candles with clean fragrance oils. So what does “clean” mean?
Our sourced fragrance oils do not contain phthalates, and additionally do not require a California Proposition 65 warning, meaning they are free from roughly 900 chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm.
Historically, the fragrance industry has not been transparent about safety. Lack of disclosure from fragrance manufacturers regarding ingredients and the possible health risks of those ingredients has been the norm. Rest assured, we took our sweet time when considering where to source our fragrances, ensuring that rigorous testing and data sheets were available.
You might be asking, “What about essential oils? Aren’t those the best?” The short answer is yes, absolutely! While essential oils are the gold standard when it comes to natural fragrances, the resource and labor-intensive process required to extract oils from their plant counter-parts, makes their cost extravagant. For example, it takes roughly 242,000 rose petals to produce just one ounce of rose oil, which drives the cost up significantly.
Our goal is to keep our natural soy wax candles accessible, in addition to ensuring that you can feel good about burning them in your home.
Speaking of safety and accessibility, let’s talk candle wax!
The vast majority of commercially made candles (like those you find at your grocery store) are made with paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum. Paraffin wax poses health risks by releasing toxic compounds like benzene and toluene (known carcinogens) when burned. It creates soot that reduces indoor air quality, which can potentially cause headaches, allergies, and respiratory irritation.
Luckily, the use of naturally-derived waxes is becoming more popular as the public wakes up to the potential health concerns of paraffin wax. At MTNS & LKS we use soy wax, produced from US grown soybeans. The only ingredient in our wax is soy!
Another popular natural alternative is beeswax. While beeswax offers excellent benefits, such as a longer burn time, and help with allergies, it doesn’t carry scent as well as soy wax, and once again, has a much higher price point. With these considerations in mind, we knew that soy wax was the right choice for MTNS & LKS.
